Some amazing developments in software technology continue to come out of the research centers from those who see a need and design the product to fulfill the requirement. For instance, a software program which can determine not only copies of an image in another location, such as in folders or subfolders, but it can look for and locate items where there is not a complete match, but only image visual similarity between the two images. An example application of such kind is Image Comparer from Bolide Software.

Locating and purging files where there is a great deal of visual similarity enables you to make sure your disk space is not taken up with duplicate files or working files. These files which have visual similarity can be located via software. They can either be visually reviewed and the correct one to be retained identified, or the software can be set at the desired level of visual similarity.

A search for image visual similarity captures and displays images that appear similar, in spite of the content or the image. These similarities may mean like colors, shapes or textures in the images. The retrieval is not dependent upon textual or other knowledge regarding the images portrayed.

Beyond searching out files and cleaning duplicate or image visual similarity items from ones web space, what uses can be made of this software?

Software products such as these for identifying visual similarity have not been as wildly popular as the creators hoped. The application of choosing from faces located on various social networking sites has been less than a rousing success. However, using image visual similarity software in order to shop online has seen a great deal of effective uses. For example, if you see a pair of earrings that you just must have in a picture on the internet, software which will locate a similar pair of earrings on the internet so that you will know where to shop for the item is becoming popular.

Initially the images being searched must be loaded and indexed to that you can find the items. At present, watches, jewelry, shoe, handbag and clothing are indexed, with the expectation that furniture and home and garden items will be added to the database in order to be available for review in the future. The features of the software would also include finding a similar shirt in a different color, or finding a table lamp that would match a particular sofa or room decor.

Well, it is definitely that time of year again, the time of year when we are all being forced to think about the holiday shopping season even before Halloween has come and gone. It’s still warm outside and the store displays are now featuring Santa Claus and the newest glittering Christmas ornaments for your Christmas tree. So, I suppose then it would be wise of us to begin thinking about how to approach our shopping techniques for the new holiday season. We simply must make a commitment to not making the same mistakes we made last year standing in the long lines, fighting the crowds, spending more than we budgeted, waiting until the absolute last minute or being the first in line on “Black Friday” (the day after Thanksgiving which traditionally marks the start of the holiday shopping season) and ultimately getting trampled over as we fight to get that discounted digital camera or flat screen tv.

Instead, we are going to take the “Smarter Shopper Holiday Pledge” (for printing and sharing).

“Smarter Shopper Holiday Pledge”

I, (insert your name here), pledge to adhere to the ten holiday shopping tips outlined below. I realize that by not doing so, I may suffer the consequences of holiday shopper’s remorse which include but are not limited to loss of cash reserves, higher credit card debt, and near insanity from overexposure to large crowds, outrageous lines, and low product inventory.

1. I will use cash.
Using cash makes it easier to stay within the budget. I don’t even mean using your debit card because you’re able to justify going over just a bit on a particular gift if there’s money available in your checking account. I say set limits, use cash, and when the cash is gone, there’s no more gift buying. Now, this is going to take some selfcontrol and I struggle with it myself at the holiday season, but if you’ve got 100 for gifts, then don’t push the budget and spend 101. No matter how wrapped up you get into the Christmas lights, music, and other smiling holiday shoppers carrying their large shopping bags, stay within your budgetcash will help you do that!

2. I will keep track of my credit card spending.
Ok, if you absolutely must use a credit card, use the one with the lowest interest and know how you are going to pay off the credit card balance. Carrying balances obviously costs more than the item itself. So, that bargain that we got at the holidays is no longer a bargain 90 120 days later. Have a plan to pay off the holiday purchases. Additionally and just as important, know how much you are spending on those credit cards. You still need to set limits.

3. I will be patient.
There’s nothing like waiting in a long check out line and have to endure price check after price check or a declined credit card holder arguing with the cashier, or even a shift change just as you approach the register. However, we all know these things happen. Calm down and be patient. Should you need a small book or magazine to bring along with you, do so. If leaving the kids at home is an option because they’ll add additional stress to your trip, do so. Maybe just taking a deep breath will help. Just calm down and be patient.

4. I will start shopping early in the season and get it out of the way.
I’ve never understood why people wait until the very last minute to do their holiday shopping when they know it drives them nuts. Start shopping now. The malls aren’t overcrowded yet. No one else is really thinking about holiday shopping for now. You could be the first one.

5. I will give less expensive but creative gifts instead.
Now, I’m not necessarily suggesting arts and crafts here unless of course that’s what you want to do. But, all of us are not creative minds. However, for example, if you think of one gift that would work an entire family, you’ll definitely save money. My family loves old movies. A great creative gift basket consisting of a few old movies, popcorn and candy, and maybe a blanket would definitely be less expensive than trying to get us all individual gifts. Think outside the box to say money!

6. I will have a game plan.
In order to get those must have items or those hard to find popular items, you have to create a game plan. That game plan has to take in consideration the availability of the items, the budget, and when you can go get the items. Don’t leave your house without a game plan outlining where you’re going, what you’re going to purchase, how much you are going to purchase it for, and what your alternate gift selections are. Yes, you should at least have in mind what the alternate gift item will be should you not be able to find the gift or if you are on the loosing end of an instore battle with another determined mom.

7. I will shop safely.
Safer is better. Watch your personal belongings at all times including handbags, purchases, and children. Pay particular attention at the register when you can be distracted by the particulars of the transaction or outside in the parking lot or waiting on public transportation. Last holiday season I was out late with other shoppers on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, where you might feel a false sense of security. A team of pursesnatchers was out looking for their next victim. They spotted her, with her children, completely distracted, purse wide open, while crossing busy Michigan Avenue. Luckily, someone else saw how the situation was about to unfold and warned her before her holiday shopping season was be ruined. Be a safe shopper!

8. I will get enough rest.
There’s nothing like going out during the holiday shopping season and running out of steam. An important part of your shopping game plan should be to get plenty of rest the night before. Get a great start in the morning with a good breakfast and wear comfortable shoes. You should be all set to go. These type of shopping trips can sometimes go all day and night, especially if you’re like a friend of mine who likes to literally shop until the stores close down, grabbing that last bargain on the rack as the last call announcement goes out over the intercom. Be prepared and get some rest.

9. I will not forget the bargains at the outlet malls.
If you are in downtown Chicago and looking for a change, one of the outlet malls for holiday bargains. You’ll need a car but the prices can be well worth the drive. When we make a list of things to do in Chicago, we often overlook the feasibility of the outlet malls. There are bargains on upscale merchandise from designers such as Kate Spade, Giorgio Armani, and Coach at Chicago Premium Outlet Mall and Lighthouse Place Premium Outlet (in nearby Michigan City, Indiana). Gurnee Mills Outlet Mall features retailers for the whole family, a huge Cineplex, as well as, a reptile zoojust in case the kids need a break. And if you go to Gurnee Mills Outlet Mall, then you might as well stop by Prime Outlets Pleasant Prairie Mall which is just a few miles away just across the Wisconsin border. Or, you might choose to visit the Prime Outlet Mall in Huntley, Illinois which is located just west of Chicago along the Northwest toll way. Visiting the Prime Outlet Mall in Huntley would give you the added opportunity to visit the IKEA store and The Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois.

10. I will attempt to avoid the crowds at all costs.
Shopping earlier during the day or first thing Saturday morning will help avoid some of the crowd during the week and those late risers on Saturday or Sunday. Or if you like shop later in the evening, most stores will have extended holiday hours. Most people like to be at home by this time. This can work in your favor. There are fewer crowds in the evening. But remember to be safe.

Note You, could of course, just do your shopping online but then that takes all of the “fun” out of the whole holiday shopping experience.

If you are wondering where to find a birthday gift for your dear friend or your mom, then ordering a designer replica handbag online will be a chic option. These handbags are made to reflect the craftsmanship and artistic design of the authentic models and will surely be appreciated by your family and friends. Gifting yourself with one of these handbags will also be a great way for you to build up your handbag collection. The best thing however is that you do not have to spend all your monthly or even quarterly earnings on a single handbag with a designer label.

A designer replica handbag looks and feels much like the original that your colleagues will certainly have a difficult time ascertaining whether your bag is an original or a replica. Unless they are top designers themselves your friends will definitely marvel at your newest accessory find, and swear that your handbag is actually from an authentic collection. This is because a replica handbag is typically crafted in the same meticulous manner as the original and utilizes top rate materials like leather and suede, brass and metal among others.

Therefore it should not be construed that replicas are cheap reproductions and are therefore of poor quality. A designer replica handbag is not the same as the massmanufactured products that are priced way below what is reasonable. A good replica must have an outstanding design pattern that will mimic how the original actually looks like, as well as exceptional quality and durability from eventual wear and tear.

This is why a replica handbag makes excellent gifts. Your budget wont have to be stretched to indefinable limits because the prices are within any ordinary working womans budget. Moreover, you wont have to face any embarrassment with giving substandard gifts to your friends and family members. The quality is excellent and if you wont tell them the handbag is a mere replica, there would be no way for them to know the truth! Most women would normally appreciate receiving handbags as gifts, because it finishes off the look of any outfit. Moreover a handbag is an important everyday accessory both for style and utility.

If you want a unique and practical gift that is sure to be cherished, then a handbag is definitely the ultimate gift for most women. With a designer replica handbag you will surely find the costfriendly present that you are looking for.

According to WebMD, 80 of all Americans suffer from back pain at some time in their lives. Pain is subjective. It is suffered at whatever level the sufferer perceives it. What may be intense, debilitating pain to one patient is tolerable to another. What is unbearable to one may be low level to another. It is up to the patient to find a medical practioner who will listen and help the patient find a solution to their suffering.

Usually the first line of defense is the patients family doctor, who may be a general practioner or a internal medicine doctor. The GP is more likely to offer an exercise regimen, non steroidals, muscle relaxants and the ice, heat routine. This is often a satisfactory treatment for patients with back strain from heavy lifting, or other mechanical injury. Internal medicine doctors are more apt to refer their back pain patients immediately to an othropedic specialist who may also determine after their physical exam that the source of pain is a mechanical injury and prescribe a similar treatment with or without physical therapy.

Those patients who dont respond to conservative therapies may be candidates for the next level of therapy epidural injections.

First of all, the physician will send the patient for radiographs of the spine, and then if the xray shows any abnormality, he may prescribe an MRI, which will give a detailed image of the spine and its components. It will show problems with alignment, arthritis, disc degeneration and other conditions.

Then the patient will make an appointment with a pain management physician who is a specialist in treating patients with back pain among other pains and also may be an anesthesiologist. The pain management specialist will take a detailed medical history which will include information about lifestyle, exercise, diet, etc. A physical will be done, including reflexes, sensation, and strength. If the pain management specialist feels the patient will benefit from the steroid epidural injection, it will be scheduled at that time.

The day of the steroid epidural injection will come with the patient having fasted after midnight and nothing by mouth in the morning. All jewelry should be left at home, along with any valuables in the female patients handbag. Comfortable, easy to remove clothing should be worn.

The patient will arrive at the facility and speak briefly to the registration person. Then she will be lead to a small room where she will undress and put a hospital gown on, and her temp, blood pressure and pulse will be taken. Then an intravenous line will be started. All the drugs the patient will get during the procedure will be given through this line.

The patient will walk to the room where the injection will be given. In many facilities, the patient will sit on the end of the bed or on their side for the procedure. But state of the art injections are given under fluoroscopy with the patient laying on their stomach. In this way, the physician can guild the injection to the exact space where the patients pain originates.

After the injection is given, the patient will go to the recovery room for one half to one hour, then back to their room to dress and go home. With two days to two weeks, evidence of the effectiveness of the injection should be apparent. Up to three injections may be necessary to obtain relief.

The school summer holidays are fast approaching. Six long weeks of keeping the kids amused.

Are you dreading those long drives to the coast etc? And the kids always shout “I’m bored” or “Are we there yet?” Well fear not, the solution is simple, why not stack up on travel games! They’re big enough to keep the kids quiet, yet small enough to fit in the tiniest space, even a handbag. Also suitable for boat, train and plane travel.

There are old favorites like, Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, Chess, Backgammon, Checkers and Solitaire. No need to worry about pieces going missing as they are magnetic, so they don’t fall off the board and onto the floor or down the side of seats. They pack away easily so there’s no fuss. You can buy as a complete set or individually.

Activity books are also great when traveling. Some come as an activity pack, that includes crayons and their own plastic wallet, these have coloring in, puzzles and games. Ideal for the younger ones.

Dice even playing cards, can be put into a pocket they can be used anywhere even on the floor.

Other travel games such as, Monopoly, Scrabble, Othello, Connect 4, Battleships, Cluedo and Trivial Pursuit are smaller versions of the original board game. These don’t have magnetic pieces. They can be stored in car door pockets, or in children’s backpacks, to be played on planes, trains and boats, as well as in the car.

Of course you don’t have to pay for keeping the kids quiet, you could always make up games of your own, such as Geography, you take it in turns, starting from the letter A then B and so on, you can use countries, towns, street names, and villages. Or you could use the last letter of the previous word for the next one, either of these are great fun when you get to the letter Y, as it gets harder. Or you could take paper and pen and make your own crosswords. There’s also I Spy.

Travel games can be bought at toyshops, online, even newsagents and supermarkets have started stocking them. The magnetic ones are 23 each, and the miniature ones range from 6 to around 15. The complete sets vary from stockist to stockist.

These games are not expensive, but well worth investing in, just to keep everyone happy and relaxed. Have a great summer!

Most people have heard luxury travel vacation horror stories about lost, stolen or damaged luggage. But in this day in age, there are a lot more restrictions about what you can and cannot pack or bring aboard, in addition to more ways to be ripped off by con artists and petty thieves. Avoid these travel stresses by following some common sense luggage safety tips.

Have a Back Up Plan

Assume that everyone at the airport is unable to help you. This means you must help yourself. First, purchase travel insurance that covers lost or stolen luggage. Make sure your luggage tags are secure and within plain sight. Bring your own luggage tags from home as a backup. Dont put your home address or phone on your luggage tags. This alerts everyone you are out of town and where you live. Plus, should your luggage get lost as you depart, you wont be at home to receive it. A good idea is to use the address of your travel agent who specializes in luxury vacations. That way, they can receive your personal items and safely hold them for you. Pack a few clothing items in your carryons, just in case. Clothing is the hardest to replace when traveling, and if you have an extra set, you will save yourself some time and money should the worst befall.

Pack Smart

Your entire luggage will be searched, and unfortunately, not all luggage screeners are trust worthy. This means do not pack any clothing items, shoes or handbags that are obviously worth over 100. If you are talking about a suit or gown, chances are no one will be able to steal that, but if you are talking about an 800 Fendi purse and matching sunglasses, you are better off putting those in your carry on. If you are bringing jewelry or electronics on your luxury world cruise do not pack them in your checked luggage, as these items are also easily taken. For more information on luxury world cruises visit httpwww.amtvacations.comamericanexpresscruises.html.

Be Aware

With changing travel restrictions, it is best for each traveler interested in luxury vacations to check new restrictions on their own. Do not trust anything that has not been verified by the government. Make sure you carry on nothing that is banned or forbidden. Should you forget, cooperate with the authorities. But the best way to avoid runins with the TSA is to be aware of procedures and regulations. Make it easier on you and them! For more help with your luxury travel vacations check out httpwww.amtvacations.comamericanexpressvacations.html.

Packing for luxury vacations does not have to be an ordeal. Have a backup plan in case something goes wrong. Pack your valuables safely in your carry on. Be aware of new and changing regulation. The key to luggage safety is using your common sense to staying informed. You have already taken the first step by reading this article!

We’re positive that no matter how you see yourself trendy, corporate or casual your ultimate goal is to look “together” to look beautiful and elegant in your poise and style of clothing and accessories. You spend hours looking for the right outfit and analyze it many times over to make sure it perfects and gives you that eye catching look. But do you give that same time and scrutiny to your accessories like your purse and handbag before throwing it over your shoulder and leaving the house?

You probably didn’t know that a purse can flatten your curves almost as much as the right pair of pants or shirt. Now that we have your attention read on to determine your shape and what type purse you should carry.

Try to choose a purse shape that is the opposite of your body type. While the shape should oppose your body type for maximum flattery, the size of the bag should be in proportion to your figure. If you are tall and thin, look for the large sloppy bags that lay against you to compliment your figure. If you’re short and voluptuous, play off opposites by choosing a handbag that is tall and rectangular or long and sleek.

Most women look great with a bag that hits midtorso because it flatters the waist.

Take a look at the five basic body shapes and find the best purse for your shape

Narrow TopFull Bottom

If you have full hips or tummy and small top, draw the eye up with accessories. You should carry a bag with short straps that fits snug under your arm.

Full TopNarrow Bottom

If the fullness you carry on top is unwanted (some do pay for it, you know) turn the area into a “no man’s land”. Nothing should cause the eye to linger so draw the eye downwards by carrying long slouching bags.

Hour Glass

If you got it girl, flaunt it! This shape best describes a woman who is balanced on top and bottom with a defined waist and is considered the ideal body shape. You can carry off anythinglucky lady!!

NarrowTop to Bottom

If you are naturally thin, you have always faced the challenges that come with dressing this body shape. If you are unnaturally thin by choice you probably, prefer to show it off. The key is to add dimension to your profile. Dont choose a bag that will hug the body too much. Think unstructured, bulky type purses. Try anything with horizontal detail in the patterns.

WIDE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM

In general, the rounder your figure, the more structured your purse should be. For this body type, shape and color is important. Colors should be muted, monochromatic is best and prints should be kept to a minimum. Draw the eye to the top or center of the torso with a midlength strap.

Now you know the right purse for you! Always remember to try on the bagjust like you would clothing and shoes. Remember that where the purse touches your body, that part of your body is accentuated. For example, if the purse is under your arm against your breast, the eye is drawn up to the bag.

So take the time to look for the right purse for youits not always the same purse that your best friend carries. A purse should not only carry your personal belongings, it should add to your style and looks.

For as long as I can recall, I have been completely obsessed with designer handbags. I spent the majority of my youth dreaming of the day when I could afford to buy my favorite designer handbags. Here I am, some ten years later, still looking forward to that day. While I have been known to skip out on my bills to buy the latest trendy handbag, I have yet to spend more than 1000.00 on an individual bag. A girl can still dream, can’t she?

I was leafing through some catalogs over the weekend, and I was amazed at how incredibly expensive some of the highend designer handbags really are. I knew they were expensive, but I had no clue how very expensive. Ohthe innocence of youth! I decided that it would be useful for our legion of faithful readers to have a handy reference of the most expensive designer handbags on the planet. So here goes

It has been written about countless times in the press and in the blogosphere, but I simply cannot resist this little gem! If I had to name an alltime favorite design house, Fendi would be the one. I don’t know how they manage to do it, but they are consistently able to strike an incredible balance between innovation and classic design in all of their creations. Fendi designs some of the most exciting handbags in the fashion industry, and the “B.Bag” is one of the most soughtafter handbags in the world. One might think that the 30,000 price tag might be a deterrent, but not for those with the means to support their addiction!

Another bag that has given me far too many sleepless nights is the Hermes “Birkin” bag! These bags were named after Jane Birkin, the ohsofabulous British actress and fashion icon. These bags are often duplicated, but never truly replicated. With a price tag of over 20,000, it is easy to understand why they are a favorite of vendors of cheap, imitation handbags. As you are likely aware, these bags are available by special order only. Furthermore, the final costs will very much be dependent on the materials and hardware used in their construction. Wow! Do I need a Sugar Daddy, or what?

If there was one other bag that creeps into my dreams with any regularity, it would be the “Muse” from Yves Saint Laurent. It is very much like a traditional bowling bag in shape and design. The first time I saw her was at Saks on Fifth Ave in NYC, and from that moment I knew one day she would be mine. If I had my way, I would choose the ohsosupple white crocodile version. I cannot think of anything I would rather spend 20,000 onaside from the “Birkin” bag mentioned above. Wouldn’t I make the perfect girlfriend? Wanna go shopping sometime?

This is a continuation of the article “Makeup Tips According To The Seasons”. Although this can be read separately, it is best to read the previous article first before reading this one.

Here are some tips on how to put on eye shadows. Apply first to the under brow a highlighter color like a light neutral color. Apply from the brow to the lid. Examples of highlighter colors to be used on the under brow were pale taupe or gray. Next, apply a second color to the orbital bone like a dark or medium neutral. These colors can be brought halfway to the lid. Examples of colors to be used on the orbital bone were smoked plum, gray, or smoked navy.

Apply a third color to the lid. These colors could be the same color as your eyes or a complimentary neutral. Examples of colors to be used on the lid were mushroom, taupe, mauve, cocoa, plum, grayed brown, smoked mauve, or navy.

When it came to picking a mascara only people categorized as “winters”, with extremely dark eyes, were to wear black. Other “winters” would wear brownblack or brown according to the depth of their coloring. If eyeliner was used, a person was to use only a touch of crayon on the outer third of the upper lid.

People categorized as “winters” were given guidelines when it came to hair coloring. “Winters” were to never to frost their hair, bleach their hair, or add red. If they used henna on their hair, it was to be natural or black. Hair colors they could dye their hair with were ash brown or blueblack.

Suggestions were given on what “winters” could wear when it came to their clothes. “Winters” were to start their basic wardrobe with neutral and basic colors. White, black, navy and taupe were the neutral colors that could be used for skirts, pants, shoes and handbags. Burgundy, bluered, true red, true blue, true green, emerald green and pine green were the basic colors that could be used for coats, suits, blazers and basic dresses. Accessories for “winters” were to be silver, platinum, or white gold. “Winters” were to pick perfumes andor colognes with spicy scents.

“Winters” were also given guidelines on which seasons to wear their colored clothes especially for them. For example, when it came to wintertime, “winters” were to wear black jackets, gray skirts, black pants, red dresses and magenta sweaters. Colors for casual blouses could be icy gray, purple, white paisley and black paisley. When it came to a dressy blouse, it was to be white. When it came to a cocktail dress, pants, or skirt it was to be black. Casual pants and skirts were to be navy. A causal top was to be red. Shoes were to be to be black, navy and burgundy. A regular coat was to be black and a trench coat was to be taupe. An evening wrap could be emerald green and made of velvet.

When it came to summertime, “winters” were to wear white jackets and skirts. The color for pants were to be navy and the color for dresses were to be true green. For a dressy blouse, the color was to be purple. A summer sweater was to be a navy knit. Colors for a casual blouse could be a true red, navy and white stripe. When it came to a cocktail dress, pants, or skirt it was to be white. Casual pants and skirts were to be were to be white as well. A casual top was to be shocking pink. Shoes were to be white, black and taupe. If summer outerwear is needed, it was to be an icy gray trench coat and a white shawl.

seven and seven
I remember, one afternoon in 2004, watching TV in my aunts sitting room in a small West Bank village. Much of the night before had been taken up speaking about the current toxic situation in the region, my family regaling me with tales of redemption, betrayal and fear. All told with a hefty serve of humour. I could tell that in some ways, peculiarly enough, there were people in other parts of the world who took their situation more seriously than themselves.

My feelings were confirmed when the next day I sat in front of the TV, flicking channels and finally settling on one of the many music stations taking the Arab world by storm. This one was called Superstar, not to be confused with the panArab Idol show of the same name, and it ran music videos and concert clips 247, SMS messages of love and flirtation scrolling constantly across the bottom of the screen in gaudy technicolour. A family friend later confirmed that they were watching Mazzika, another of these music channels, more than AlJazeera. It all seemed very bizarre to me, but I concluded that in such times of trouble, no matter how misguided it seemed, music videos, with their cheeky storylines and buffed, goodlooking and impossibly happy actors, obviously served as an antidote. Forget occupation and war Nancy Ajram had a new album out.

I guess not even a familiarity with Western MTV culture would prepare me for the pop culturesaturated Middle East I visited and slightly recoiled from. I write this as a Muslim who has grown up in Australia, but with an enduring love of my heritage. I encountered a Middle East I wasnt quite prepared for on many levels, but my understanding is layered and borne out of something entirely different to that of those women who visit the Arab world in search of tales of woe (think Geraldine Brookes Nine Parts of Desire and the more recent The Veiled Lands by Christina Hogan). And I think thats partly why I dont feel any richer for having read Muhajababes.

Meet Allegra Stratton, BBC journalist and twentysomethingyearold. She lets you know straight off the bat that shes a bit of a firecracker. Shes had an argument with her roommate about the legitimacy of the US invasion of Iraq roommate says its bad, Stratton thinks its good news. She soon realises that the war in Iraq is nothing short of a catastrophe and this somehow leads her to take some time off to explore the Middle East, no doubt in search of 10yearolds wielding AK47s. Id go there and see whether their young population in all its puppyfat enormity was taking form as the profs would like it to. I wasnt going to get into Iraq but I could go to countries near it, she tells us importantly and in what is, as I eventually realise, her humourlite style. There are funny moments, but shes not a comedian.

Strattons book of conversations is essentially that a record of her meetings with anyone who seemed her age whom she interviewed (youth being her basic criteria) during her trek through Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Dubai. What Stratton seems to have found is a bunch of pretentious, hippynostalgic luvvies, who, incidentally, are just as annoying as their Western counterparts.

To give you an idea of the flavour, consider some of the characters she covers theres Walid who wants to instigate revolution in Lebanon, despite having one of the less autocratic governments in that part of the world, and whom she describes as a lucky mixture of the best bits of some of the worlds foxier men. What Mr Potato Head would look like if he had David Bowies frame, Bob Dylans head, shoulders and slouch, and Jimi Hendrixs mania. She also meets the Jordanian Daoud, an untalented (according to Stratton) artist of nude paintings who barely scrapes by and neglects his widowed mother in pursuit of bad art. Then theres Darah, a sexually ambiguous woman who first introduces Stratton to the term muhajababe. It is Darah who, in gridlocked traffic, points out two girls who were cigarello thin and Coco Chanel chic. Both wore blacknylon bootcut hipster trousers and high heels, carried baguette handbags and wrapped around their heads were black sheer headscarves as tight as the rest of their outfits.

Finally, meet the muhajababes. Music clipinfluenced girls and the inspiration for the book, who appear to veil either because they have to or because Amr Khaled, an enormously popular preacher from Egypt, told them they should.

I think were meant to be overwhelmed and enlightened by this revelation. Yet none of this greatly surprised me, having seen countless young women on the street in Amman and even in Sydney adopt this approach for years, their bodies wrapped seductively in tight clothing, and their headscarves sitting loosely on their madeup faces, the scarf looking very much like a nuns habit without the cap. Muhajababes are everywhere, yet Stratton suggests shes discovered something extraordinary. In fact, this is one of the problems with her commentary she writes as though everything is shocking and finds a great deal taxing when it comes to fatwas and culture. She certainly doesnt seem to like Islam or Muslims very much, or perhaps its just a superior attitude of indifference with her seeming to roll her eyes impatiently every so often in response to all the silliness surrounding her.

Either way, Strattons Sesame Street approach to panArab politics and lifestyle is frustrating its all so unthinkable and peculiar to her, yet finding the Middle Easts losers or aspiring, dreamfuelled youth with a beef or two is hardly groundbreaking and I soon wondered how amazed we would be if an Arab woman went to the US and the UK and talked about all of the awful things she heard about.

Based on her conversations, Stratton zones in on two main figures Amr Khaled, who she paints as little more than a puffedup and ridiculous evangelical figure of influence for the starved masses who follow him, lemminglike, as he spreads the word. The other is wealthy Saudi Prince AlWaleed bin Talal, who runs these 247 music channels through his Rotana satellite stations.

The two are in stark contrast with each other, yet their respective influences connect. Khaled leads the reformation of Islam with personal trendy piety, or what Egypts Muslim Brotherhood (Al Ikhwan) once called, Stratton notes, airconditioned Islam, leading girls to hijab before theyre ready AlWaleed tells them what they should aspire to with his music clips. The result are muhajababes, girls who weakly attempt to reconcile the contradictory.

I took an obscene amount of notes as I read, yet none of it seems greatly significant now. Sufficed to say, both Khaled and AlWaleed exert great amounts of influence and are making changes in their own successdriven ways.

Muhajababes essentially proves that greed and stupidity are alive and well in the Middle East, and excels in demonstrating the obvious there are troubled areas, social misfits, a severe lack of freedom in general and a crucial diversity in attitudes, religiosity and culture. The Middle East is a melting pot of random things, and it is, not surprisingly, increasingly influenced by the West, Stratton observing that capitalists and major companies recognise the surge in palatable, Khaledstyle piety and are using it for their own gain, Westernstyle.

Take, for example, Sami Yusuf, the outrageously popular seminasheed singer whose video clips grace TV screens inbetween Ajram and Amr Diab and who even promoted Coca Cola when he released his first album. He falls squarely into the Khaledism slot a sexedup religious approach. There are certainly interesting anecdotes and snippets of worthy commentary, but overall, it is a disappointing trip into the ordinary.

Meanwhile, Stratton doesnt inject much of her own personality into the book, except to deliver cynical and, at times, snotty observations, all told in her oftcaustic style of overflowing prose. While refreshingly honest in her obnoxiousness, I couldnt help but feel that, while greatly amused by the simpletons she met, Stratton not only seemed bored and unimpressed but was also perhaps questioning why she was even there.

She confesses, at one point, to being bored by the subject of hijab, saying she wanted to find something a bit more fun. And thats the crux of it, because I am not convinced that this book, for all its magnanimous observations and research, is actually important. Rather, it seems little more than a young womans project to cash in on the Arab phenomenon hers is a search for the obscure and tryhardish in the Arab world, and the result is a catalogue of the disheartened, disenfranchised youth who, not very uniquely, have social problems to deal with.

The main difference with the Western worlds social problems being, obviously, a lack of democracy in the background. (And after reading some of the contentions contained within this book, one could truly think democracy is a cure for the worlds ills). As Stratton comments at one point, when she has become weary, she thought asking people about democracy in the Arab world was like talking about the weather, both because discussion of it was all around you, and because no one had any say in determining it.

I envision how this book will be sold. An intriguing and eyeopening insight into the Middle East, with Stratton cast as a hip, daring Westerner ready to smash through the stereotypes with every click of her keyboard. Yet, it is Stratton herself who casts people, hoping to find an A, B, C of culture clash and establishment rebellion. The more interesting conversations never occur, and she herself confesses that the book she wrote is not the one she initially set out to capture. I cant help but feel that there could have been much worthier tales to share and more deeply hidden experiences to uncover.

She ignores, for example, devout Muslims, depriving the book of any balance, focusing instead on selfhaters with delusions of grandeur and a gripe or three. Its all so hammy that even Stratton observes her struggle to not cringe when listening to one particular girls tale. These people offer their insight into why life is as it is for others, but more than anything they just complain and censure (for example, the girls not wearing hijab are quick to refer to muhajababes as the sluttiest girls around).

She does confirm that the Middle East has its own share of affected lattesippers to contend with. But admittedly, the sippers may actually have something to truly fight for because as Stratton takes 280 pages to inform you, the Middle East is a hotbed of change and revolution right now. Its just a shame you dont close the book and want to go there yourself.
